NEWS BRIEFS: Fort Worden committee meetings set … and other items

Two Fort Worden committees will meet Wednesday.

The Fort Worden Public Development Authority executive committee will review the draft 2017 budget when it meets at 9 a.m. in the Seminar Building (Building 297) at Fort Worden, 200 Battery Way at 1 p.m.

Fort Worden Coordinating Committee will review compliance with the master lease terms and conditions when it meets at 1 p.m. in the same place.

It also will review the 2016 maintenance report, and the maintenance plan for 2017, as well as its capital plan.

It will hear year-end reports on Fort Worden and the public development authority in charge of the campus.

Sing sea shanties in PT

PORT TOWNSEND — The Sing Shanties Song Circle will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The free gathering will be at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St., Port Townsend. Songs will be those that once echoed across the Victorian waterfront during the golden age of sail, organizers said.

Swearing in

SEQUIM — The Sequim community is invited to joing the City of Sequim as Police Chief Sheri Crain is sworn in Friday at 11 a.m. in the Council Chambers at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St.

Cemetery District

GARDINER — Gardiner Community Cemetery District No. 3 commissioners will meet Friday.

The meeting will be at 5 p.m. at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.

The meeting was rescheduled from Thursday, Dec. 8, when the meeting was canceled.

The public is invited to attend.

Concert canceled

SEQUIM — The Sequim City Band’s holiday concert “Sounds of the Season” that was scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 21 has been canceled because of a scheduling conflict.

Key components of the Sequim High School auditorium’s heating system are being replaced prior to the students’ return to classes in January.

The band’s next concert will be at 3 p.m. March 19 at the high school auditorium.

Meter seminar

PORT TOWNSEND — A free “Spin Your Meter Backwards” seminar will take place at the Port Townsend Yacht Club, 2503 Washington St., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

This class is for anyone who has an interest in how to install solar Photovoltaic panels for a home and how it can decrease energy bills and benefit the environment, according to a news release.

Sink the ship

PORT TOWNSEND — Amnesty International Local #1106 Chapter members invite the public to join them in writing letters to sink the ship of injustice from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 18.

The letters will be written at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave. in Port Townsend.

Part of Amnesty’s annual Write for Human Rights campaign, the event will mark this season of good will by gathering and writing advocacy letters on behalf of prisoners of conscience around the world.

Discussion group

SEQUIM — The Sequim Great Decisions Discussion Group will host a discussion from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the Sequim Public Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

The topic for this discussion will be “The Power of Populism — How and why has populism reemerged with a vengeance in the heart of the advanced industrial world?”

The suggested background reading for the discussion are the articles in the special section “The Power of Populism” in the November/December edition of Foreign Affairs published by the Council on Foreign relations.

New members are welcome.
