OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Clallam County Fire District No. 2 firefighters helped Saturday in what they called an “unusual rescue.”
Firefighters aided an Italian hiker who had become stranded on a rock outcropping about 35 feet above Hurricane Ridge Road on Saturday afternoon, according to a press release.
The incident was first reported at 3:03 p.m.
Firefighters set up above and below the hiker then used ropes to help him down.
A firefighter rappelled down as a ladder was raised up to the hiker, who was uninjured.
“Fire and Park officials urge visitors to stay on recognized trails,” the release stated.
Coffee with mayor
SEQUIM — Residents can meet informally with Sequim Mayor Dennis Smith at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
Smith will be at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill at 707 E. Washington St., for the July edition of the Coffee with the Mayor program.
Barbara Hanna, communications and marketing director, will join the mayor for the meeting.
The mayor will be at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community.

Railroad Bridge dinner tickets on sale
SEQUIM — The Dungeness River Audubon Center will host the third annual Dine on the Dungeness event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11.

During the event at the center’s Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, attendees can partake in food catered by Kokopelli Grill Chef Michael McQuay and Kathryn Kitts of Sweet Beginnings while viewing the scenery from the park’s historical bridge.
A beer and wine garden will be available.
Funds will benefit the audubon center and railroad park.

Zombie escape
Teens in Forks, Port Angeles and Sequim are invited to participate in the North Olympic Library System’s “Escape Room Challenge: Zombie Apocalypse” at their local library.
The first event will be held Friday, July 21 at the Forks Library, 171 N. Forks Ave.
The second event will be held Friday, July 28 at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.
The final event will be held Friday, Aug. 3 at the Sequim, 630 N. Sequim Ave.
Each event will begin at 6 p.m.
Attendees will “help save the world and escape the zombie apocalypse … working together with other players to find clues, solve critical thinking puzzles, and break codes in order to retrieve the zombie anti-virus,” according to a press release.
