NEWS BRIEFS: Elwha River Bridge to close Wednesday; Jefferson County burn ban upgraded

PORT ANGELES — The Elwha River Bridge on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles will be closed to all traffic for roughly two hours Wednesday morning.

The work closure will be from approximately 8:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., according to a state Department of Transportation press release.

During that time, Transportation crews will remove equipment and a work platform that is currently resting in the river.

Transportation crews used this equipment to perform drilling activities associated with design work on a new Elwha River Bridge.

Motorists are advised to use state highways 112 and 113 as a detour during the closure.

Drivers are also advised that the two-hour timeframe is approximate and depends on work progress.

Burn ban upgrade

PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Fire Chief’s Association has upgraded its burn ban throughout the county to include recreational fires.

Previously, the ban allowed for barbecue grills, and recreational and ceremonial fires in pits, with the exception of yard debris burns.

According to East Jefferson Fire-Rescue Chief Gordon Pomeroy, the ban now includes all ground fires, campfires, and recreational and ceremonial fires.

The only outdoor burns permissible are gas- or charcoal-powered barbecue grills, according to a press release.

The upgrade is based on recent weather conditions and the state Department of Natural Resources’ recent total burn ban on DNR-managed lands.
