NEWS BRIEFS: Conductor replacement to take place in Port Angeles alley starting Monday … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Replacement of overhead conductors in the Front Street-First Street alley between Washington and Alder streets will begin Monday and continue through the end of the year, city officials said.

Brief localized outages are expected to customers in the area.

The contractor, Christenson Electric Inc., will contact area businesses in advance to schedule and minimize the impacts of these outages, the city said.

The work is intended to improve the capacity and reliability of the Port Angeles electric utility.

Tax-Aide in Quilcene

QUILCENE — Appointments can be made in late January with AARP Tax-Aide volunteers who will prepare and e-file tax returns at the Quilcene Community Center on three dates this season, beginning in February.

The Tax-Aide volunteers will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25; Thursday, March 16; and Saturday, April 8.

Appointments can be made with staff at the Quilcene Community Center at 360-765-3321.

The service is free and open to anyone. It is sponsored by the IRS and the AARP Foundation.

Tax-Aide volunteers are required to see photo identification and Social Security cards for the filer, the filer’s spouse and dependents.

Because the IRS has provided new software for Tax-Aide this season, volunteers have no record of prior returns. So filers must bring their returns from last year, as well as W-2s, 1099s and any other documents necessary to complete the 2016 return.

Those who want refunds directly deposited into their bank account must bring a checkbook or bank document showing the bank account numbers.

Those who need to obtain replacement Social Security cards can contact the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213, or www.ssa.gov/ssnumber.
