SEATTLE — A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Port Angeles flew to assist in a rescue of two 12-year-old kayakers who were stranded on Crab Island in Lopez Sound on Wednesday.
The kayakers paddled out to meet Coast Guard Station Bellingham crew members aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium and were safely transported to the boat ramp at Hunter’s Point on Lopez Island.
Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound watchstanders received a report at approximately 2:05 p.m. that the boys were paddling together in a single kayak and had been battling the water’s current for over an hour with no progress.
The boys made it safely to Crab Island but had no way of returning to Lopez Island on their own.
Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles crew members aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, who also responded to the rescue, remained on scene ready to assist if needed.
Weather at the time of the rescue was reported as a 52-degree air temperature, 48-degree water temperature, 12-knot winds and 1-foot sea swells.
Unity speaker
PORT ANGELES — Unity in the Olympics’ 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service guest speaker will be Niobe Weaver.
Her lesson is titled “The Heart of Everyday Life.”
Weaver is a sound healer and singer who shares her language of light sacred songs and messages from her guides, according to a news release.
A time for silent meditation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.
Child care is available during the service.
Taize service
SEQUIM — All are welcome to the ecumenical Taize service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., at 7 p.m. Monday.
There will be a meditative, candlelit atmosphere that includes singing simple, repetitive songs during the hourlong service.
Taize will continue to be held the fourth Monday of each month.
Biblical concert
PORT ANGELES — The public is invited to a free concert at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at United Methodist Church.
Don and Donna Mohl of Fair Grove, Mo., will perform music using biblical and traditional instruments at the church at 110 E. Seventh St.
Instruments the duo will use include the hammered dulcimer, bowed psaltery, zither, mountain dulcimer, mandolin and guitar.
CDs, DVDs and hand-crafted instruments will be available for sale following the program.
