NEWS BRIEFS: Coast Guard aids ill sailor on destroyer … and other items

PORT ANGELES — A Coast Guard aircrew medevaced a sick Navy sailor to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island on Sunday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound received the medevac request from the command of the USS Kidd, a Naval destroyer homeported in San Diego, at 1:44 p.m.

The Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles aircrew arrived at 3:20 p.m. in a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, landing aboard the ship transiting the Strait of Juan de Fuca, according to a Sunday evening press release.

The sailor was then picked up and flown to the naval air station where he was met by emergency medical services and transported to Island General Hospital for further care.

The sailor, a 23-year-old man, was in stable condition at the time of transport.

PORT HADLOCK — Chimacum Creek Primary School will hold its Kindergarten Round Up at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Upcoming students and parents can come see the school at 313 Ness Corner Road, visit classrooms and meet teachers.

Those interested can pick up registration packets in the school’s office.

A Literacy Night from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. will also be held at the school.

Facilitators sought

FORKS — The Alzheimer’s Association Washington State Chapter seeks to recruit a volunteer facilitator for one of its support groups.

A commitment of at least one year is required to serve at the association’s monthly Family Caregiver Support Group.

Those interested in volunteering can contact director of community support Linda Whiteside at 1-800-848-7097, 206-529-3875, or lwhitesi@alzwa.org.

The support group’s schedule and location will be determined when a facilitator is appointed.

Individuals who are working or retired social workers, nurse and other health care professionals, educators, clergy, counselors and former family caregivers are encouraged to apply.

The group aims to provide a consistent and caring place for caregivers to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who are also on a unique journey of providing care to a person with memory loss.

Trained volunteers have the opportunity to receive training, ongoing support, resources and continuing education, according to the release.

Educator grants

The Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma has announced an application deadline of Sunday, April 15 for its continuing education grants.

Applications for the Helen Gariepy Grants for School Educators are available online by visiting www.betanuchapter.com. To submit an application, postmark it to Beta Nu, P.O. Box 2407, Sequim, WA 98382.

Educators or paraprofessionals in Clallam and Jefferson county schools who are working for professional improvement or development of their skills can apply.

Funding can be for full reimbursement of funds or for partial reimbursement of programs not paid for from any other sources, according to a news release.

Emergency prep business is open in PA

PORT ANGELES — Coastal Emergency Management Solutions LLC recently announced it has opened for business.

The business, at 2226 Black Diamond Road, provides disaster preparation consultation services including employee training for businesses, evacuation drills and drafting of emergency operation plans.

CEO Hollie Kaufman has emergency management experience and is a National Healthcare Disaster Professional, according to a press release.

She has worked with various organizations and businesses, including the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, to help with individual hazard vulnerability assessments, emergency action and continuity of operation plans.

She is also available to work with families to ensure that safety plans are in place and practiced.

Employees hired

SEQUIM — First Security Bank has announced that it has hired new employees at its Sequim branch.

Tyrone Beatty and Jolene Kovach have joined as an assistant branch manager and a personal banker, respectively.

Beatty has been in banking for more than 11 years and has a broad range of experience from teller to assistant manager.

He also is a skilled musician with a Bachelors and Masters of Arts in viola performance.

He is currently the viola section leader with the Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra, and is slated to play a solo viola concerto with the Port Angeles Chamber Orchestra in October.

Kovach, a lifetime resident of the North Olympic Peninsula, has been in banking for 27 years as a teller, lead teller and service manager.

She has volunteered with the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, the Sequim Food Bank and at area car shows, according to a news release.
