NEWS BRIEFS: Clallam County Fire District No. 3 commissioner to retire from board June 30 . . . and other items

SEQUIM — Clallam County Fire District No. 3 Commissioner Richard Houts has announced he will retire from the board June 30.

A new commissioner might be appointed at the next regular meeting July 8 at 1 p.m. at 323 N. Fifth Ave.

Houts, who announced his retirement Tuesday, said that after thoughtful consideration, he believed it was time to step down.

He thanked everyone for their support throughout the years and said he was sad to be leaving.

Houts has been a commissioner for the district for 17 years.

Before coming to Sequim, he was the chief engineer or fire chief for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Houts has been in the fire service for a total of 52 years.

School board meets

SEQUIM — The Sequim School Board will meet in executive session today to review the performance of a public employee.

The closed meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. in the superintendent’s office, Room 212, at 503 N. Sequim Ave.

No action is expected to be taken after the meeting, which is expected to last for about two hours.

OMC commissioners

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Medical Center commissioners plan a quarterly educational retreat from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.

The retreat will be in the sunroom at OMC, 939 Caroline St.

Topics of discussion will be the current 2016-18 strategic plan and drafting the 2017-19 strategic plan.

No formal action will be taken.

Title sponsor named for competition

Washington Coast Works has announced the Quinault tribe as the title sponsor for the 2016 Sustainable Small Business Competition.

“The Quinault Indian Nation is a critical partner for us,” said Eric Delvin, Emerald Edge project manager at The Nature Conservancy.

“Their commitment to conservation of their natural resources and to sustainable economic development is clearly demonstrated by their sponsorship of Washington Coast Works.”

The business training aspect of the competition is underway and will conclude during the Entrepreneurship Summit at the Olympic Natural Resources Center, 1455 S. Forks Ave. in Forks, on July 22-24. At the summit, participants develop their presentation pitch and polish business plans for a chance to vie for up to $20,000 in startup financing.

The winners will be announced in October.

Other competition sponsors include Enterprise for Equity and the state Department of Commerce.

Boating cards

PORT TOWNSEND — Five students recently earned certification with the U.S. Power Squadron’s America’s Boating Course, which was taught in conjunction with the Point Wilson Sail & Power Squadron.

Cole Walters, Alexander Genaw, Ramsay Smith, Benjamin Cundiff and Kyama-Marie Ally Bradley took and passed the written exam for the certification, which was taught by Port Townsend High School instructor Kelley Watson.

Ramsay Smith, commander of the Point Wilson squadron, and Linda Newland, squadron education officer, presented the certification to students.
