NEWS BRIEFS: City council candidate drops out … and other items

FORKS — Bill Paul, the Forks-area Clallam County Fire District 1 fire chief, has dropped out of the race for Forks City Council Position 3, he said Thursday.

Paul, whose name will still be on the Aug. 1 primary election ballot, said Thursday afternoon that he is withdrawing for personal reasons.

“With the fire department and stuff going on, I don’t need the added stress,” Paul said.

Paul’s departure from the race means that Jo Soha and Mike Gilstrap will contend for the position in the Nov. 7 general election, which also includes contested Forks City Council races for mayor between Ken Ayers and Tim Fletcher and Position 4 between Bill Brager and Bridgette Soha.

Races remaining on the Aug. 1 primary ballot in Clallam County are for Port Angeles City Council Positions 1 and 2; Forks-area Clallam County Fire District, Position 5; Port Angeles-area Fire District 2, Position 1; and Sequim-area Fire District 3, Position 2.

Races in Jefferson County on the primary ballot are for Jefferson Healthcare hospital district commissioner, Position 1, and for Chimacum School District School Board, District 5.

Witnesses sought

SEATTLE — The State Patrol is seeking witnesses to a collision in Seattle at about 4:48 a.m. Thursday that sent a driver to Harborview Medical Center.

A 2001 Chrysler Town & Country van was traveling on Interstate 5 just south of the Washington State Convention Center on Pike Street when it changed lanes and struck the rear end of a semi-trailer, the State Patrol said.

The van struck the barrier and rolled onto its side, which resulted in the driver sustaining a broken arm and other possible injuries.

The semi continued south without stopping.

The State Patrol is seeking any witnesses to this collision along with identifying information for the semi. Information can be given to the tip line at 425-401-7741.

PORT ANGELES — Unity in the Olympics’ 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service guest speaker will be Larry and Carmel Davis.

Their lesson at the church, 2917 E. Myrtle St., is titled “The Father and I Are One.”

According to a news release: “The notion of traditional fathers and their presence in our lives has radically shifted through the last few decades. However, the relationship through the Christ-like presence of Father figures in our lives continues to support the fabric of our very existence.”

Larry serves families through Education Advocates and is a member of the Unity community.

Carmel leads a local spiritual community through training, meditation and program development since her departure from Unity of Bremerton, where she was a lay minister, prayer chaplain and administrator.

A time for silent meditation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.
