Candidate forum today

PORT ANGELES — With midterm elections just months away, Indivisible Sequim will host two candidates for public office from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. today.

The meeting will be at the Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1033 N. Barr Road.

Selinda Barkhuis, a contender for Prosecuting Attorney of Clallam County, and Jim McLaughlin, vying for Clallam County Sheriff, will talk and answer questions about what they will do if elected to public office.

Maple Fire grows

SHELTON — The Maple Fire 23 miles north of Shelton has grown to 1,245 acres, it was reported Saturday morning.

It was 15 percent contained, the Northwest Interagency Incident Management Team 10 said.

The fire is burning on Olympic National Forest and State Trust lands about 5mileswest of U.S. Highway 101. The focus of suppression efforts is on the east side of the fire to minimize damage to State Trust lands, said Alan Lawson, incident commander.

It began at about 11 a.m. Aug, 4, authorities said and was caused by human activity. An investigation is under way.

Air quality remains good across the North Olympic Peninsula.
