NEWS BRIEFS: Annual breastfeeding week begins … and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) will recognize World Breastfeeding Week beginning with a picnic set for Wednesday.

The family-friendly event titled “Annual World Breastfeeding Week Picnic” will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Chetzemoka Park, 900 Jackson St.

Attendees are requested to bring lunch or snacks to enjoy.

No food or beverages are provided officially, according to a news release.

In addition to the picnic on Wednesday, a World Breastfeeding Week booth will be available at the Port Townsend Farmer’s Market from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Haines Place Park & Ride, 440 12th St.

The booth will also be at the Uptown Farmer’s Market at 650 Tyler St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Special Supplemental Nutrition Program Woman, Infants & Children breastfeeding moms who are able to attend any of the celebrations will receive a special gift package, according to the release.

The booth is sponsored in partnership with JCPH, the Jefferson County Farmer’s Market and Jefferson Healthcare.

Flight operations

COUPEVILLE — There will be field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island at Ault Field evening to late night and early morning Monday through Wednesday.

Practice also will occur late morning to afternoon Thursday.

Closed for parade

JOYCE — State Highway 112 will be temporarily closed through Joyce during the Joyce Daze Parade on Saturday.

The highway will be closed to traffic from the intersection with Piedmont Road to east of downtown Joyce from 12:30 p.m. and 2:40 p.m.

A detour route to bypass Joyce will be available.

Voter guide panel

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Board of Commissioners is seeking individuals to serve on a committee to draft a voters’ guide argument for the Nov. 6 general election.

Each measure appearing in the online guide and printed voter pamphlet includes the official ballot title, explanatory statement, and the arguments for and against the measure.

Individuals are needed to serve on the committee to craft the “against” argument for the Clallam County Department of Finance proposal.

Interested parties should contact the clerk of the Board of Commissioners by 9 a.m., Tuesday.

Delays near Forks

FORKS – Traffic delays are expected Monday through Thursday on six miles of U.S. Highway 101 near Forks.

State Department of Transportation maintenance crews will place a new chip-seal surface on the roadway.

Starting at 7 a.m. Monday, travelers will encounter one-way alternating traffic with flaggers between Whitcomb Dimmel Road and Lake Creek Road during daylight hours.

The chip seal treatment — crushed rock embedded into liquid asphalt — will help preserve and extend the life of the highway pavement, the state said in a news release.

Free senior lunch

PORT TOWNSEND — A free gourmet lunch for seniors at Victoria Place is set for noon Friday.

Registration is required by 5 p.m. Tuesday. To register, call 360-638-3845.

The lunch will be held at Victoria Place, 491 Discovery Road.

Following the lunch, tours of the senior living community will be held.

Registrants are encouraged to invite their friends.
