The public is invited to the Northwest Martime Center’s Speaker Series, featuring Jonathan White, on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
At this free event, he will present “The Science and Spirit of the Tides” at the center, located at 431 Water St., Port Townsend.
White will focus on how tides can be at different heights in nearby areas and why some places see one tide a day, while others see two or even six tides.
White will also sign his book “Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean” in the Raymond Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2201 S. Peabody St., on Friday, Feb. 24.
He will read select passages of his book at 7 p.m.
Copies of the book are $28 and will be available at the signing.
Students awarded
PORT ANGELES — Several Port Angeles High School juniors received the Noon Club Student Activity Recognition (STAR) Awards from Soroptimist International of Port Angeles.
The STAR awards recognize exceptional students in their junior year.
The criteria for selection include effort and willingness to work in the subject area, success in the subject area and passing with above-average grades in the subject area.
Winter awards were given to Shannon Cosgrove, academics; Stephanie Grimes, fine arts; Preeti Court, creative learning; Nathan Denton, instrumental music; Marcus Trujillo, career and technical education; and Madelyn Dougherty, physical education/athletics.
Giveaway contest
PORT ANGELES — Black Ball Ferry Line is hosting a contest in which participants could win a free trip to Victoria.
The challenge is titled “$149 Trip Challenge: Victoria Edition,” and to participate, interested parties need to submit a video by Tuesday, Feb. 28, explaining how they and a travel companion save money on a vacation.
The 25 most savvy spenders will win $298 — $149 per person — to spend on a one-night, two-day Victoria getaway with Black Ball Ferry Line.
The winning teams will document their trip online with photos and videos displaying how they have fun while saving money.
One team will win a grand prize of a three-night, four-day vacation package.

Employees awarded
SEQUIM — The Sequim Education Foundation recently recognized three board members for their service to students in the Sequim community.
Shuana Anders and Al Friess were presented the Crystal Apple Award for their length of service and hours dedicated to the foundation’s mission “to be a catalyst for vibrant growth of each student in the Sequim Community,” according to a news release.
Anders served as secretary of the board of directors while volunteering additional hours for foundation events and activities.
Friess served as scholarship chair and “did everything be could to ensure students who required financial assistance got the money they needed to their education,” according to the release.
Jeanne Martin received a gift card for her role as a founding member and financial guidance as treasurer.
