NEWS BRIEFS: Unity speaker on the schedule for weekend service … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Unity in the Olympics’ 10:30 a.m. Sunday service speaker will be Donna Little.

Her lesson at the church at 2917 E. Myrtle St. is titled “The Power of Order.”

Little is the minister for Unity in the Olympics.

A time for silent meditation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Child care is available during the service.

Metaphysical book sale

PORT TOWNSEND — Unity of Port Townsend will hold a sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday at the Unity Spiritual Enrichment Center, 3918 San Juan Ave.

They will have books, baked goods and other treasures.

They will also hold a silent auction and a raffle for some rare editions.

Volunteers for trails set to be feted

SEQUIM — The Peninsula Trails Coalition will host its 30th annual volunteer celebration from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The event will be at the Guy Cole Event Center, 202 N. Blake Ave.

Food and beverages will be provided and a drawing for prizes is planned.

Some of the founding members of the Peninsula Trails Coalition will attend.

Dinner sold out

SEQUIM — The 19th annual Friends of the Fields Harvest

Dinner on Sunday is sold out.

The North Olympic Land Trust sold 225 tickets at $150 each for the dinner at 5 p.m. at Sunland Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive.

The theme of the dinner will be “Know the Hands That Feed You.” It will feature the flavors of several local farms as North Olympic Peninsula’s farm-to-table chefs, bakers and butchers come together to

make the multi-course meal.

Scott Chichester, owner and farmer of Chi’s Farm in Sequim,will be

honored as the Land Trust’s 2018 Farmer of the Year.

Last year’s event raised more than $60,000 dedicated to local farmland conservation, said Tom Sanford, Land Trust executive director.

The Land Trust is now working toward the conservation of a 132-acre farm in eastern Clallam County known

as Wonderland & The 80.

Located at Port Williams and Schmuck roads, Wonderland & The 80 is one of the largest

pieces of working farmland in the area.

Open house

QUILCENE — The Quilcene Cemetery, 481 Cemetery Road, will

hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday

The event will recognize the recent addition of

92 tombstones on previously unmarked graves, the 40th birthday of the formation of the Cemetery District and the 134th anniversary of the first burial.

A self-guided walking tour and light refreshments will be available.

Oceans series

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Marine Science Center will present a lecture series, “The Future of Oceans,” starting at 3 p.m., Sunday,

Oct. 14.

The monthly series will explore the frontiers of ocean research and emerging technologies.

Featured speakers include: Charles Eriksen, Ph.D., professor of oceanography at University of Washington; Robert Steelquist, author, naturalist and environmental educator; Florian Graner, cinematographer, diver and environmental advocate; Jan Newton, Ph.D.,

senior principal oceanographer at University of Washington; and Bob Boekelheide, Ph.D.,

former director of the Dungeness River Audubon Center.

The lectures will be held in the Chapel at Fort Worden State Park, 200 Battery Way.
