NEWS BRIEFS: AARP driver safety class offered in Chimacum this week … and other items

CHIMACUM — An AARP driver safety class will be offered at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

The two-day class is designed to help refresh driving skills and inform attendees of revised laws.

The cost for the class is $15 for AARP members, $20 for nonmembers.

Participants who are 50 or older can qualify for a discount.

The class is limited to 20 participants.

Celebrating poetry

PORT TOWNSEND — A poetry appreciation of 20th-century poet Pablo Neruda will be presented at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave., from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

The facilitator will provide biographical, critical, translation and craft insights about Neruda’s work and invites participants to share their expertise.

The event is free, though sign-up is required.

Cybersecurity jobs

PORT ANGELES — Michael Hamilton, who has 25 years of experience in information security, will be the featured speaker at Peninsula College’s Little Theater from 12:35 p.m. to 1:25 p.m. Thursday.

Hamilton has served as a cybersecurity policy adviser for Washington state, is the former chief information security officer for the city of Seattle and was former managing consultant for VeriSign Global Security Consulting.

Hamilton has consulted with more than 200 private sector organizations throughout the past 25 years, from Fortune 1 to small nonprofits, and developed algorithms for hyperspectral remote sensing of the ocean at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The event is free and open to the public.

Meditation retreat

PORT TOWNSEND — A meditation retreat with Heather Martin, sponsored by the Port Townsend sangha, will take place at the Port Townsend Yacht Club, 2503 Washington St.

The retreat is scheduled for Friday through Sunday.

The Friday evening talk is at 7 p.m. and is open to the public at no cost.

The Saturday talk is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Sunday talk is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There is a $20 registration fee for the Saturday and Sunday talks.
