PORT ANGELES — Bar N9ne will host its 2nd Friday Art Rock tonight with the band Farmstrong and artists April Hergert and Jeff Tocher.
The dance party will start at 9 p.m. at the bar at 229 W. First St. A $3 cover charge will help support the musicians and artists.
Farmstrong, a Sequim band, plays bluegrass from the 1920s through ’50s as well as folk, rock, gospel, and soul from more contemporary decades. The band formed in 2013 and has already recorded “Live in Dungeness — The Summer Sessions,” and “Forever.”
Hergert is a graphic artist and interior design major at Oregon State University. She is making her 2FAR debut alongside Tocher. Hergert will sketch the festivities in charcoal while Tocher works whimsical, colorful magic, said Dan Lieberman, 2nd Friday Art Rock spokesman.
Chain gang busy
PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang washed county road department trucks at the county shop during the week of June 12-16.
Notable items found along roadways were a hide-a-bed, two mattresses, a TV, a metal tank, a metal gate, two baby strollers, nine needles, three tires, a printer, a plastic shelf, a sump pump, a metal fence post, two heaters, two shopping carts and an iPhone, which was returned to its owner, a Department of Natural Resources employee.
Crew members found illegal dumpsites on Eunice Street, Brook Avenue and Woods, Fish Hatchery, Cassidy Creek, Lees Creek, Deer Park and Siebert Creek roads, totaling 1,100 pounds of garbage from the dumpsites.
Crew members also cleaned 1 mile of the old Rayonier mill access and 300 pounds of litter, 2.4 miles of Little River Road and 100 pounds of litter, 2 miles of Diamond Point Road and 120 pounds of litter, and 4 miles of Chicken Coop Road and 160 pounds of litter.
Crew members also pulled approximately 225 Scotch broom plants on Mount Pleasant Road.
From June 19-23, the chain gang members repaired hand tools and weed-eaters at the county shop, cleaned the inside of Chain Gang 5 and assembled furniture, as well as set up Chief Corrections Deputy Peterson.
Notable items found along roadways were an old car, one needle, two tires, two bikes, two couches, two mattresses, a recliner, a chair, tote and toys, a car stereo and a sleeping bag.
Crew members found illegal dumpsites on Woods and Mount Pleasant roads, and 19th, 16th and M streets, totaling 3,800 pounds of garbage from the dumpsites.
Crew members also trimmed and cleared brush in county right of way on Deer Park, Mount Pleasant, East Scrivner, Monroe, Arnette, Kemp, Leighland and Ranger roads.
Crew members also pulled approximately 100 Scotch broom plants on Ranger Road.
The chain gang has so far this year cleaned 451.2 miles of roadway, picked up 62,720 pounds of dumpsite litter, picked up 39,500 pounds of roadside litter, recycled 2,992 pounds of aluminum, trimmed 35,267 feet of weeds along guardrails, removed or sprayed 1,135 Scotch broom plants and brushed 23.25 miles of county rights of way.
Student wins
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lucas Verstegan, a Port Angeles High School student, received a Skill Point Certificate in Action Skills award at the 2017 SkillsUSA Championships.
The championships, held June 21-22, attracted more than 6,000 student competitors, according to a news release.
Industry leaders from 600 businesses, corporations, trade associations and unions planned and evaluated the contestants against their standards for entry-level workers, according to the release.
Skill Point Certificates were awarded in 72 occupational and leadership areas to students who met a predetermined threshold score in their competition, as defined by industry.
The Skill Point Certificate is a component of SkillsUSA’s assessment program for career and technical education.
Speaker set for Unity in the Olympics
PORT ANGELES — Unity in the Olympics’ 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service speaker will be the Rev. Donna Little.
Her lesson at the church, 2917 E. Myrtle St., is titled “The White Stone Ceremony.”
According to a news release: “The White Stone Ceremony is a service in which each one has an opportunity to receive a new spiritual name as part of our Becoming process.
“This transformative ritual is based on Revelation 2:17: ‘Let anyone who has ears listen to what the Spirit is saying in the Churches.’ ”
Little has been a licensed and ordained Unity minister for more than 10 years and is a resident of Sequim.
A time for silent meditation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.
Child care is available during the service.
Church open
SEQUIM — Sunday services will continue at Peninsula Evangelical Friends Church, 1201 N. Barr Road, despite the current closure of Old Olympic Highway for the McDonald Creek Bridge replacement.
According to Pastor Jonathan Fodge, “we continue to gather for worship every Sunday at 9 a.m.”
The earlier time is an experiment to meet unmet ministry needs and remove impediments to people attending services, Fodge said.
During the bridge closure, people arriving from Sequim, Carlsborg and other points east of the construction zone are advised to take U.S. Highway 101 to North Barr Road, and follow the road north to the friends church, on the corner of North Barr Road and Old Olympic Highway.
Parking and entrances to the church on both Old Olympic Highway and Barr Road are available.
