NEWS BRIEFS: 23 graduate from emergency medical technician class … and other items

PORT HADLOCK — Jefferson County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Trauma Care Council’s 2018 Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class graduated 23 students March 24.

The graduates are Katherine Nydegger, Lorenzo Dowling, Curtis Beery, Sally Marrone, Chad Holbrook, Mckenzie Ginther, Aaron Parker, Shannon Kelley, Zane Madinger, Andrew Raney, Scott Kutcher and Jacob Shepherd.

Also, Halie Duke, Jeffery Beck, Robert Grimm, Rebecca Christoforo, David Sutton, Keaton Christian, Sara Gearhart, Jeff Gearhart, Collene Funk, Mathew McCrehin and Nora Cosbey.

The class is a three-month, 200-hour course.

This was the largest class to graduate thus far, senior EMS instructor Tim Manly, Brinnon Fire Department Fire Chief and paramedic said in a news release.

“Many of the students are currently affiliated with East Jefferson Fire-Rescue, Quilcene Fire Rescue, Discovery Bay Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Jefferson Search & Rescue, but many were not,” Manly said

The class is offered at least once a year, first to fire districts, and then the general public, according to the release.

Tour de Forts

PORT TOWNSEND — Registration is open for the ReCyclery’s annual community bike ride and fundraising event slated for Saturday, June 9.

The event, Tour de Forts, will take cyclists of all ages and abilities on a scenic and historic trip, with rest stops available at Fort Flagler and Fort Worden state parks.

All rides will begin at Finnriver Orchard & Cider at 124 Center Road, Chimacum.

Those interested can select four different routes varying in length from 11.5 to 61.5 miles.

Following the ride, participants can return to Finnriver and receive a free event t-shirt, a cup of ice cream, and for those 21 and older, a complimentary glass of cider.

All proceeds from the event benefit the ReCylery’s programs such as apprenticeships, volunteer programs, bike giveaways, scholarships and food drives.

Local graduate

BISMARCK, N.D. — Former Sequim resident Erin Henninger graduated April 28 from the University of Mary with a Master’s of Science degree in occupational therapy.

Henninger received her undergraduate degree in psychology in 2016, also from the university.

She will spend the next six months completing occupational therapy clinical fieldwork — three months in Minot, N.D., in a pediatric outpatient setting, and three months in Richland in a skilled nursing facility.

Soon thereafter, she will sit for the occupational therapy certification exam.

Henninger is the daughter of Ray and Ann Henninger of Sequim.

EWU honor roll

CHENEY — Several former Olympic Peninsula students were named to Eastern Washington University’s winter honor roll.

Undergraduate students who earn 12 quality hours and receive a GPA of 3.5 or better are placed on the dean’s list for the quarter.

The former Peninsula students were:

• Forks: Sarah Adams and Tabetha Brock.

• Port Angeles: Jordan Johnson.

• Port Townsend: Grayson Pennell, Chace Larsen, Ezra Easley and Gerard Coker.

• Sequim: Sven Wiker, Hailey Letser, Alexis Serrano, Stefan Dewey, Aaron Hope, Shannon Robbins and Jamie Miller.
