NEWS BRIEF: PA schools pick board president … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Joshua Jones has been elected the 2017 Port Angeles School Board president.

Sarah Methner will continue in her role as vice president.

Both were elected unanimously at the board’s Dec. 8 meeting at Franklin Elementary School.

They will serve in the positions for one year.

Other directors who continue to serve on the school board are Cindy Kelly, Sandy Long and Susan Shotthafer.

PT schools

PORT TOWNSEND — Nathanael O’Hara will continue to hold his position as chairman on the Port Townsend School Board in 2017.

Board member Keith White was voted in as vice chairman during the board’s annual reorganization Monday.

O’Hara and White will serve on the finance committee. O’Hara also will serve on the policy review and facilities and long-term planning committees along with board member Jennifer James-Wilson.

Board members Connie Welch and Laura Tucker will make up this year’s instructional materials committee; Tucker and James-Wilson will be on the wellness committee; and the technology committee will be the sole responsibility of Welch.

Reservations open for PT classes

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson Healthcare will present two programs next month.

The first will be 12 sessions of “Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance,” scheduled to begin Jan. 10 at Mountain View gym, 1919 Blaine St.

Tai Ji Quan is a fall prevention program for adults that consists of warmup exercises, core practices, variations of forms, mini-therapeutic movements and cool-down exercises.

Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. with Sarah Grossman, MS, PT, or 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. with Tracy Ware, PTA.

The second program is a six-week chronic disease self-management workshop that meets every Wednesday from Jan. 10 through Feb. 14.

Participants meet from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the first floor of Jefferson Healthcare, 834 Sheridan St., in the rehab center’s Olympic Room.

The free program is meant to help people explore healthy ways to live with a long-term physical or mental health condition, according to a news release.

Class size is limited to 18 people.
