PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College students have moved into a new fitness center after the formal opening of the $1.2 million facility last week.
The new Peninsula College Fitness Center was dedicated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Peninsula College President Luke Robins and Associated Student Council President Jason Trammell, with other college officials and representatives of the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce attending the Wednesday ceremony.
The use of the facility is limited to registered students taking for-credit classes, said Phyllis van Holland, spokeswoman for Peninsula College.
The 3,223-square-foot fitness center was an addition to an existing gymnasium on the Port Angeles campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
The center features treadmills, adaptive motion trainers, elliptical machines, stationary cycles and rowing machines for cardio training as well as strength training equipment, Van Holland said.
The center has its
own restrooms and a
laundry room.
Students previously used an on-campus weight room for strength training classes and the Clallam County Family YMCA for cardio fitness classes.
Planning for the project started during the 2009-2010 academic year under the leadership of then-ASC President Athena Christianson and Stephanie McGarvie and Laura Campbell Russell, vice presidents.
The student body leadership worked with the college administration, including former Peninsula College President Tom Keegan, on the proposal and offered the potential student fitness center to a student vote in the spring of 2010.
The student ballot measure, which added a fee for enrolled students, passed with an overwhelming majority.
Student leaders participated in the needs assessment and design phases and helped select exercise equipment, under 2010-11 ASC President Jeremiah Johnson and 2011-12 President Jonas Brown.
The Fitness Center was designed by Schacht/Aslani Architects of Seattle, and built by PHC Construction LLC of Bainbridge Island.
