Negotiations discontinued over parking near Sequim Civic Center

SEQUIM — City officials have discontinued negotiations for property to build a parking lot on Spruce Street near the new civic center.

The city was unable to reach an agreement with the property owner, city officials said.

The City Council voted Monday to stop negotiations with the owner of two properties on Spruce Street to the north of the new civic center that might have been used for city vehicle parking and access to the facility.

Lease agreement

The council had authorized City Manager Steve Burkett to enter into a lease agreement for the purpose of a parking lot at 161 W. Spruce St. and 169 W. Spruce St. during their Dec. 8 meeting.

“The parking that we were envisioning if we leased that property was just surplus additional parking just for some public works vehicles,” Burkett said Thursday.

“The rest of our parking plan is still in place.”

The city is building two parking lots to the west and northwest of the new building, according to building plans available on the city’s website.

The joint capacity for both parking lots under construction is about 40 vehicles, Burkett said.

Some employees will have to park on the streets around the facility or in a public parking lot across from the new City Hall on Sequim Avenue.

The old City Hall was torn down in April 2014 to make room for the new $15 million City Hall that will bring the administration, public works and police departments under the same roof for the first time in decades.

The new building is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy later this year.
