Nearly $200,000 in repairs to close high school’s track

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School track will be closed on Tuesday to permit $198,858 worth of repairs.

Nolan Duce, district maintenance director, said the track could remain closed until Aug. 22.

“I’m hoping it will be available for use much sooner, but we’ve allowed extra time in case it’s needed for the repairs,” Duce said.

A safety evaluation in fall 2007 led to the Port Angeles School Board approving the $198,858 repair contract to Atlas Track and Tennis in March.

Maintenance staff reported uneven surfaces in portions of the track, and inadequate drainage that sometimes causes pools of runoff water on the track.

Maintenance staff can no longer repair these areas, Duce said.

“The expense not only supports the education of the children in the district, but also the larger community use of the school districts’ facilities,” board member Patti Happe said.

“In addition, we are striving to meet the intent of the interlocal agreement with the city of Port Angeles to support recreational activities for all the citizens of the community.”

Work is being done in the summer to minimize disruption to student programs.

The track surface and blacktop will be removed, some of the base will be excavated, and new base will be added.

The infield will be graded to avoid surface runoff on the track.

A curtain drain will be added to the north side of the track to allow water to exit the field.

The asphalt support base will be reapplied and a synthetic surface installed.

Lakeside Industries will be the subcontractor for removal and installation of the blacktop and curtain drain.
