Neah Bay: Storm-damaged sailboat in distress stirs bogus report of collision, sinking

NEAH BAY — A 36-foot Canadian sailboat, damaged by a large wave during a storm Monday, was rescued after an intense search during which officials through that a fishing boat had struck a tugboat.

The sailboat Neptuna, with two people aboard and adrift 25 miles north of Tatoosh Island, was towed to a Canadian port Monday evening by the Canadian Coast Guard.

“The reports were the sails were damaged and the vessel’s machinery was inoperable, so it was disabled and adrift,” said Petty Officer Dominic Moreno from the 13th Coast Guard District headquarters in Seattle.

The names of the two people aboard were not available.

The initial report from the U.S. Coast Guard at 9:20 a.m. Monday was that a 36-foot fishing boat named “Neptune Two” had collided with a tugboat-barge combination and was taking on water 2½ miles north of Tatoosh Island.

The Coast Guard dispatched two 47-foot motor lifeboats from Station Neah Bay. The National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration research vessel Rainier and the tugboat Arthur Brusco also were diverted to the scene.
