Neah Bay: Makah tribe will harbor historical ferry Kalakala for most of this year

PORT ANGELES — The historic Kalakala ferry will be towed to Neah Bay in about a week after owner Steve Rodrigues on Saturday announced an 11th-hour deal struck with the Makah tribe to temporarily moor the deteriorating 1935 vessel there.

Rodrigues said the vessel will remain in Neah Bay through the Makah Days festival Aug. 27-28, then move on to Everett, where he expects to close escrow within 90 days on a five-acre private tidelands parcel for a Kalakala restoration site.

The 276-foot Kalakala has been moored and rusting in Lake Union since 1998, and Rodrigues, who was paying $1,000 a day for moorage, was under pressure to move the vessel by Wednesday.

Rodrigues, a Tumwater developer, joined Makah Tribal Chairman Ben Johnson Jr. on Saturday in saying the vessel will be moored at west end of Neah Bay to a 300-foot section of the former Interstate 90 floating bridge.
