NEAH BAY — The Makah tribe has set aside 278 acres in the Waatch River valley in an effort to restore the marbled murrelet population.
The tribe will receive $1.4 million for the easement from a fund established to rectify environmental problems associated with the 100,000 gallons of fuel oil spilled when the Tenyo Maru sank July 22, 1991.
“It’s estimated we lost 7 percent to 11 percent of the marbled murrelet population on the coast as a result of the spill,” Makah tribal wildlife biologist Rob McCoy said.
