Navy plans hearing on tidal energy

CHIMACUM — The U.S. Navy conducts an open house Wednesday on a proposed tidal energy kinetic hydropower system demonstration project in Admiralty Inlet, offshore of Marrowstone Island.

Navy officials will present information and hear comments beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Chimacum Elementary School Library, 91 West Valley Road.

The demonstration project would provide environmental and operational information to help better understand the operating capabilities and environmental effects of tidal kinetic hydropower systems in the Puget Sound.

Public comments will help the Navy to prepare an environmental assessment to evaluate the potential environmental effects associated with the installation, one year of operation and removal of the system’s turbines, turbine foundation, power cable, monitoring equipment, and onshore facilities.

This environmental assessment is being developed in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969.

The Navy will consider comments on environmental aspects to be considered in the environmental assessment through August 1, 2009. Written comments may be submitted at the open house, online at www.nps-khps.net or email to peter.havens@navy.mil.

Mail to: NPS-KHPS, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Northwest, attention: Peter Havens, 1101 Tautog Circle, Silverdale, WA 98315

Additional information related to the environmental assessment is available on the project web site: www.nps-khps.net.
