PORT ANGELES — Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest have announced a complete ban on campfires.
The Stage 2 fire restrictions that came into effect Friday also include charcoal and anything else that produces ash, a Park Service press release said.
Gas and propane camp-stoves are still allowed in campgrounds and the wilderness backcountry although caution is recommended with any open flames.
The upgraded restrictions are due to continued hot, dry conditions on the peninsula.
“We have already seen wildfires start throughout western Washington and these types of conditions are highly conducive to wildfires starting on the (North Olympic) Peninsula,” said Jeff Bortner, an interagency fire management officer.
