PORT TOWNSEND — U.S. Sen. Patty Murray on Monday applauded a city and Port of Port Townsend partnership, saying it was a major reason she helped secure $500,000 to advance construction of the Northwest Maritime Center and streetscape improvements downtown.
“When I see a town like this that works together . . . this is just a delight to me,” said the third-term lawmaker who was the first woman from Washington to be elected to the U.S. Senate.
“You really are an inspiration, and it’s really a wonderful place to visit.”
She said once President Bush signs the bill that includes the $500,000 appropriation, “the check is in the mail.”
The $500,000 will help support streetscape and transportation improvements in Port Townsend’s historic district.
These improvements will also support further development of the $10 million Northwest Maritime Center, which will showcase the regional significance of marine trades and maritime activities.
Murray, ranking Democrat on the Senate Transportation Committee, secured $250,000 for development of the Northwest Maritime Center last year.
