LAKE SUTHERLAND — A huge mudslide on South Shore Road blocked the road and knocked an unoccupied summer cabin off its foundation and almost into the lake early Monday morning.
The slide covered about 150 feet of South Shore Road and also knocked out power to Lake Sutherland residents west of Eyres Road for about 10 hours.
According to Clallam County Fire District No. 2, the approximately 400-square-foot cabin was crushed when a large section of hillside on the south side of the road gave way about 3:35 a.m.
Information on the cabin’s owner was not available.
The slide sent mud and trees sliding across the road and into Lake Sutherland.
A plugged culvert also sent a large amount of water across the road and partially flooded a nearby house before fire district personnel diverted the water to a drain.
Lake Sutherland resident Dave Weikel, the Peninsula Daily News technical services director, said residents on the lake’s north shore reported a 3-foot-high wave sweeping across the lake following the mudslide.
South Shore Road was almost cleared of debris by about 2:30 p.m., but a Clallam Public Utility District truck continued to keep the road closed until power was restored, Weikel said.
The mudslide occurred in pretty much the same place as one in 1995, Weikel said.
