Motorists beware! More Hood Canal Bridge closures

SHINE — Motorists, beware.

More unscheduled Hood Canal Bridge closures are planned both in the daytime and at night beginning Monday.

Sporadic daytime closures of up to 10 minutes will occur “as needed,” state

Department of Transportation engineers said.

Intermittent test openings will occur between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. for about six nights beginning Monday, including weekends. Those delays will be up to 90 minutes.

The times of the closures are not announced ahead of time.

Unscheduled closures for marine traffic also occur as needed.

State Transportation officials announced last week that a problem with the hydraulic system on the west side of the bridge had been fixed.

The floating bridge’s east-half replacement project was completed ahead of schedule in early June, and work since has focused on retrofitting mechanical and electrical systems of west side, which was widened to match the new east half.

State Transportation and contractor Kiewit-General are now conducting functional testing and reviewing all systems on the west half of the bridge.

All testing could be completed in as soon as 10 days, the department said.

More than two dozen contract employees are expected to continue to work on the west half through March.

To find out if the bridge is open, dial 5-1-1, or phone toll free at 800-419-9085.
