Motorcycle wreck survivor’s condition upgraded

PORT ANGELES — The condition of a 64-year-old Port Angeles man whose wife died Tuesday in the same motorcycle collision was upgraded to satisfactory Wednesday at Harborview Medical Center.

A spokeswoman for the Seattle hospital said Wednesday that Michael Lee Currie, 64, was transferred Wednesday morning from the intensive care unit.

Currie was airlifted to the hospital following the crash. Sharron Ruth Currie, 63, died at the collision scene in the 300 block of O’Brien Road east of Port Angeles.

Emergency personnel found the Curries lying in the road after their 1991 Harley Davidson collided into the passenger side of a 2006 Chevy Silverado pickup that turned left in front of them to go into the Fairview Bible Church parking lot, authorities said.

While the investigation continued Wednesday, Sheriff’s Office Chief Criminal Deputy Brian King remained certain that criminal charges would not be filed against the pickup driver, a 34-year-old Sequim woman whose name has not been released.

“Failure to yield appears to be the cause at this point,” King said Wednesday.

The woman was southbound on O’Brien Road and the Curries northbound, coming down a hill, when the woman turned left, saying later she did not see the motorcycle, King said.

Investigators had not spoken with the driver since Tuesday, he said, adding he did not know if she signaled she was turning.

“We usually, typically take some time before we approach the driver and have more of those conversations,” King said.

The investigation should be concluded by Friday, he said.

Alcohol, drugs and speeding were not factors in the collision, King said.
