Motorcycle rider injured in crash with SUV on U.S. Highway 101

LAKE SUTHERLAND — A Neah Bay man was injured Sunday when the motorcycle he was riding struck an SUV as it turned into Granny’s Cafe, the State Patrol said.

Matthew L. Beston, 19, was riding a 2004 Yamaha YZF-R6 on U.S. Highway 101 when it collided with a 2019 Chevrolet Traverse driven by Luke D. Thompson, 38, of Duvall, troopers said in a report.

Thompson was driving eastbound before the crash. He was turning left into the Granny’s Cafe parking lot when the vehicles collided in the westbound lane, the State Patrol report said.

Beston was transported by ambulance to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles. He was stabilized at OMC and transferred to another hospital, an OMC spokeswoman said.

Beston was listed in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Monday, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.

Beston was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, the State Patrol said.

Thompson and his four passengers, each of whom were wearing seat belts, were uninjured, troopers said.

The motorcycle came to a rest in the westbound shoulder. The SUV stopped in the westbound lane, affecting highway traffic for nearly two hours, troopers said.

Thompson was charged with failure to yield. Beston was cited for not having a motorcycle endorsement, according to the State Patrol report.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were involved, troopers said.
