QUILCENE — Robert “Moe” Moser, deputy chief of the Quilcene Fire Department, has died.
Moser, 78, died Saturday, said Gordon Pomeroy, Quilcene fire chief.
Moser had been diagnosed with cancer four months ago and had retired six weeks ago to look after his health, Pomeroy said.
Moser, who lived in the Coyle area west of Quilcene with his wife, Marnie, served the district for more than 24 years, said Herb Beck, fire commissioner for the agency formally known as Jefferson County Fire District No. 2.
Moser served as interim fire chief twice during his tenure as deputy chief.
He served primarily at the Coyle Fire Station.
“He was known for his willingness to serve anyone, anywhere,” Beck said.
Moser assisted in training firefighters throughout Jefferson County, according to Bill Beezley, East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokesman.
“He was an institution in all of our departments,” Beezley said.
“He will be sorely missed.”
A community memorial is being planned, Beck said.
