More than 24 percent of ballots now returned in Jefferson County

More than 24 percent of ballots had been returned by Thursday in Jefferson County for the Aug. 16 primary election.

Out of 21,819 ballots mailed out, 5,300 — or 24.3 percent — have been returned, said Betty Johnson, voter registration coordinator.

The number does not include replacement ballots.

A total of 106 ballots were undeliverable.

In Clallam County, 21.26 percent of the 19,102 ballots issued — or 4,062 ballots — had been returned, Auditor Patty Rosand said.

Jefferson County voters are deciding on an $8.4 million bond issue for the expansion and renovation of the Jefferson County Library.

They also are voting on a race for the Port Townsend City Council seat now held by Laurie Medlicott, who is not running for re-election.

Two viable candidates

The ballot has four names, but only two — Jack Range and Deborah Stinson — are viable candidates.

Both Paul Richmond and Pamela Adams withdrew from the race after the deadline had passed to remove their names from the ballot.

Richmond said he could not devote the necessary time to a campaign, and Adams discovered she did not meet residency requirements and could not serve.

In the city of Port Townsend, 1,190 ballots, or 17.4 percent, had been returned out of 6,840 issued — a number that includes replacement ballots.

In the library district, 4,110 ballots, or 27.36 percent, had been returned out of 15,022 issued.
