More than 150 children and adults check out fire trailer

JOYCE — Clallam County Fire District No. 4’s Fire Safety Trailer attracted more than 150 children and adults during this year’s Clallam County Fair.

Operating every year at the fair, the trailer uses lighting and artificial smoke to simulate a house fire with the aim of teaching children about fire safety, prevention and safe exits.

Fully geared firefighters were on hand to help children overcome fears associated with house fires in their breathing apparatuses and bunker gear.

During the event, volunteers also handed out safety education materials while talking to attendees about topics such as home fire safety, the “stop, drop and roll” routine, smoke alarm maintenance and how to safely escape a burning building to dial 9-1-1.

The fire safety trailer was purchased via a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant in 2002, according to a news release.

Since its inception, the Washington State Grange, Lions Club and other community organizations and individuals have helped raise funds for operational and maintenance expenses of the trailer, according to the release.

For more information, call the fire station at 360-928-3132.
