SEQUIM — A woman accused of setting fire to a motel room in which her family was staying was charged Wednesday with three counts of attempted murder.
Sheree L. Clemons, 26, said nothing during the short afternoon hearing in Clallam County Superior Court, where Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jill Landes filed the charges against her.
Judge George Wood questioned whether Clemons could understand what was going on, after the woman’s initial court appearance Monday when she was restrained to a chair and a family member described her as “like a zombie.”
“I’m satisfied that she’s competent for the proceedings to go ahead,” attorney Ted DeBray of Clallam-Jefferson Public Defenders said.
Mental evaluation asked
Landes asked that Clemons undergo a mental competency evaluation by Western State Hospital, and the judge said he is inclined to order one based on Clemons’ behavior two days earlier.
The evaluation and a possible conflict with Clemons’ appointed attorney will be considered this morning when Clemons returns to court at 9 a.m. for arraignment.
She remains in the Clallam County jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
