PORT ANGELES — A sculpture that was stolen from its display in downtown Port Angeles was returned Monday — just two days after it was discovered missing.
The aluminum sculpture of an octopus-like sea creature, titled “Unipus,” was discovered missing Saturday.
“It just showed up there in front of Chase Bank and is now at the [Port Angeles] Police Department,” said Jan Harbick, Port Angeles Downtown Association vice president.
“I think it is fantastic that it is back.
“There is no way to know for sure but I think probably the fact that word got out and it was in the paper so quickly might have scared them into bringing it back.”
The story of it missing appeared in Sunday’s Peninsula Daily News and online on peninsuladailynews.com.
Harbick said it will be reattached and that the artist will be contacted to assist with the process.
The artist, Gabrielle Glasen, said she was relieved that the sculpture was returned.
“I was ready to put a reward out — and then I got a call it had been put back on the pedestal,” Glasen said.
Glasen said the $8,000 piece was insured, but to her that wasn’t the point.
“It is really a special piece to me,” she said.
