NEAH BAY — A U.S. Coast Guardsman formerly stationed at Neah Bay who was killed last weekend while serving in Iraq will be honored today in a memorial service at Neah Bay High School.
Those who knew Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan Bruckenthal are invited to attend. The service begins at 5 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.
Bruckenthal, 24, was killed Saturday in the Persian Gulf during a terrorist suicide bombing attack on an Iraqi oil terminal. He is the first member of the Coast Guard killed in combat since Vietnam.
Bruckenthal was stationed in Neah Bay from spring 2001 to summer 2003, and spent his spare time volunteering as a reserve police officer and volunteer with Neah Bay Public Safety and as an assistant coach for the Red Devils high school football team.
