PORT ANGELES — A memorial service for Gerald David Howell, 40, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Eagles Aerie 483 lodge, 2843 E. Myrtle St., in East Port Angeles.

Howell died of a gunshot wound at his home at 130 W. 11th St., Port Angeles, on Oct. 7.

Howell, the father of two daughters, worked as a welder, pipefitter and machinist at Vigor Marine, previously known as Straits Marine, in Port Angeles.

He learned his trade through the Job Corps and also was an instructor for the Job Corps.

Gary Carl Borneman Jr., 39, of Port Angeles is currently in the Clallam County jail held on $2 million bail on seven charges related to the shooting of Howell and the kidnapping of Rebecca Messinger, 31, on Oct. 7.

An arraignment is set for 1:30 p.m. Oct. 24.

According to a Port Angeles police report, Borneman took Messinger at gunpoint from a residence at 714 Georgiana St. and forced her to drive him to the residence she shared with Howell.

During the drive, according to a statement from Messinger, Borneman fired a shot inside the vehicle.

Messinger told police that Borneman tied her inside her van and went inside the house.

She escaped from the vehicle and called 9-1-1 from a cellphone at about 7 p.m. as she hid in the bushes behind the house.

Police said they found Borneman in the front yard of the house, holding a .22-caliber pistol and with injuries to the hands and face.

He underwent surgery on his hands at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle before being booked into Clallam County jail Saturday.

The back door to the house was kicked in, according to police, and Howell’s body was found in the laundry room area with a shotgun between his legs and partially on top of his body.

Messinger, who has a 2-year-old child with Borneman, has a protection order against him, police said.

Two funds have been set up to help Messinger move into a new house with her five children.

Donations can be made online at www.gofundme.com/fpoa40 or to the Becky Messinger fund at any area First Federal branch.

Healthy Families of Clallam County also is accepting donations for the family. To donate, phone 360-452-2381.

Messinger’s van was seized by police as evidence after its use during the kidnapping and shooting, and a new vehicle was provided to her by Healthy Families.
