PORT ANGELES — A community meeting will be held tonight to inform and organize residents around establishing a downtown skating rink this fall.
The meeting will be a 6 p.m. in the City Council chambers at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.
Organizers are seeking donations for the project.
“Nobody has said you can’t do it,” Edna Petersen, owner of Necessities and Temptations gift store, told the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce luncheon-goers last Wednesday.
“We are going to have to do it with good, old Port Angeles community spirit and hard work.”
The proposed 3,200-square-foot Port Angeles Winter Ice Village will be at 121 West Front St., east of Station 51 Taphouse, Petersen said.
It will be in operation from Nov. 23 to Jan. 6, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
The City Council has approved a $35,000 request in lodging taxes submitted by the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce for the $130,000 project as a down payment for the temporary rink to Ice-America of Harbor City, Calif.
The chamber will have volunteers staff the facility, which the chamber estimates will draw 8,600 visits.
The rink will hold up to 131 skaters per session, according to the chamber’s lodging tax application.
Sessions will cost $12 to $20 per 90-minute session of open skating with rentals, according to the application.
