Measles shots offered Thursday at free clinic in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — A no-cost measles vaccination clinic will operate from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Clallam County Health and Human Services public health clinic, 111 E. Third St.

The time has been changed from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine clinic.

The evening hours are offered to serve those who must come after work, public health officials said.

Phone 360-417-2274 for an appointment. Walk-ins will be served but might have to wait until after those with appointments are vaccinated.

Four cases of measles were reported in Clallam County in February, the last in the third week of the month. No cases have been reported in Jefferson County.

Two have been reported in Grays Harbor County. One was reported last week in Whatcom County.

No new cases have been identified. However, those exposed to any of the people with measles could incubate the disease until April 6 at the latest, Iva Burks, Clallam County Health and Human Services director, has said, and others could be infected from other sources.

“The measles scare is not over,” said Dr. Jeanette Stehr-Green, interim Clallam County public health officer.

“We want to continue to reach out to groups in the community that may not be protected against measles.”

Last week, vaccination clinics were held in Forks through the coordinated effort of the Forks Community Hospital, Bogachiel Clinic, Quileute Valley School District and the county public health department.

“We appreciate the pro-active stance of Olympic Medical Center, Peninsula Children’s Clinic, Lower Elwha Health Clinic, Forks Hospital and Bogachiel Clinic,” Stehr-Green said.

Peninsula Children’s Clinic sent reminders to parents of all of their patients who are not fully immunized against measles, encouraging them to bring their children to the clinic to get vaccinated or take advantage of county clinics.

Vaccine also will be supplied to Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics personnel, who will immunize people at Project Homeless Connect on Friday at Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Another immunization clinic is planned from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 10 in the Pirate Union Building at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

In Port Townsend, clinics are at the Jefferson County Public Health Clinic at 615 Sheridan St. and Jefferson Healthcare hospital’s walk-in clinic at 934 Sheridan St.

The county clinic operates from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and offers the MMR vaccine on a walk-in basis.

Jefferson Healthcare’s clinic is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Vaccinations aren’t available for walk-ins. People must schedule them by calling 360-379-8031.

The vaccine is free at both clinics. The hospital clinic charges an administrative fee billable to insurance.
