PORT ANGELES — Special programs and a movie are planned to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates the civil rights leader’s birthday of Jan. 15 and is held on the Monday closest to that date.
The Peninsula College Port Angeles campus will continue celebrations begun Thursday with drama students reading selections from King’s writings and speeches at noon today, Friday, in the Pirate Union Building cafeteria.
A program will be presented by Clallam AmeriCorps from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Jefferson Elementary School gymnasium, 218 E. 12th St.
A movie will be offered by Olympic National Park, which will show a 30-minute video, “A New Time, A New Voice,” twice a day on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the park visitor center, 3002 Mount Angeles Road, in Port Angeles.
April 4 will mark the 40th anniversary of King’s 1968 assassination in Memphis, Tenn.
“Because it is the 40th year, it is a big nationwide push to remember that we should make this a day on,” rather than a day off, “not just a nice three-day weekend,” said AmeriCorps member Kasha Rybczyk, one of the organizers of the elementary school presentation.
