PORT HADLOCK — Emotions ran hot Wednesday night when Port Townsend environmental activists challenged Jefferson County Public Utility District commissioners about the need for an environmental review of its Marrowstone Island water system project.
The proposal did not sit well with Marrowstone Island residents at the meeting, who now have to truck in drinking water because saltwater intrusion around the island has fouled their wells.
They saw the request as an unwelcomed stall tactic.
“Why are you trying to stop us from getting our water?” Pat Savoy asked, confronting Port Townsend resident Nancy Dorgan.
Dorgan had just told PUD commissioners that the record showed they had previously supported a Washington State Environmental Policy Act review of the project.
Dorgan, a Port Townsend resident, also has challenged the county’s Irondale-Port Hadlock proposed urban growth area.
