PORT HADLOCK — Jefferson County Public Utility District No. 1 commissioners voted to hire an appraiser to work on a proposed Marrowstone Island public water system Wednesday night.
The appraiser will determine how much each parcel owner will be assessed for the $3 million project to install the public water system. The assessment will be based on the benefit the water will bring to each parcel.
Supporters and opponents alike see the move as the logical choice to keep the issue alive.
Opponents to the hiring were unhappy that utility commissioners chose to spend $98,000 on the contract, but Marrowstone Island resident Rita Kepner acknowledged she expected the outcome.
Water system proponent Scott Cassle, on the other hand, said he is saddened that a Utopian vision of a community getting together to share an equal share of the project’s cost is unrealistic.
