Women will lead a march through downtown Port Angeles and a rally in Port Townsend on Saturday to honor the life and legacy of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The March for Ruth in Port Angeles is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on the steps of the Clallam County Courthouse on Lincoln Street.
A rally is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday in Port Townsend at the corner of West Sims Way and Haines Place.
The events are among more than 300 planned in communities nationwide on Saturday to not only honor Ginsburg but also to object to President Donald Trump’s policies, according to the national Women’s March group, womens march.com/2020-march. A major march will be held in Washington, D.C.
While the events will be led by local women, men and children are also welcome, organizers said.
“Everyone is welcome,” said Port Townsend rally organizer Cara Griswold. “Bring your signs, your face masks and your pink hats.”
The Port Angeles marchers will use sidewalks and walk past downtown stores and Hollywood Beach.
It is estimated to last 35-40 minutes. Organizers say marchers will need to wear face masks and socially distance.
Flags and appropriate signs will be welcome.
“We will honor the amazing life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who fought for equal rights for all people,” said Sandy Ulf, co-organizer of the Port Angeles march. “Ruth was very clear that one of the most important rights we have in this country is to vote.
“Ruth said, ‘Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.’
“Please join us. And please vote. Our lives depend on it,” Ulf said.
There will be an opportunity during the march to register to vote, she added.
