PORT ANGELES — A man who found what looked like a small explosive device about the size of a coffee cup in his mailbox tried to get rid of it by dropping it off at the post office.
The man, whose identity is not being released by police, discovered in his mailbox a small device wrapped in black tape with a fuse attached.
For reasons that are not clear, he took the device to the post office at about 4:30 p.m. Monday.
“I’m not sure why he brought it here,” said Ron Gates, postmaster for the Port Angeles postal facility, 424 E. First St.
Postal Service employees immediately took the device to a safe area away from the public and called police, Gates said.
Postal service was not interrupted.
Police sent to scene
At 4:30 p.m., two Port Angeles Police officers were sent to the scene.
“Responding officers observed that the suspect device did in fact appear to be some sort of homemade explosive device,” said Port Angeles Police Sgt. Steve Coyle.
A Washington State Patrol bomb technician was then called by police and arrived on the scene within a few minutes.
