Man killed when struck by vehicle

Another bicyclist hurt when he hits car

A 59-year-old man riding a bicycle was killed when a motorist on Old Olympic Highway struck him, according to the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.

Neither the man nor the driver were identified in a press release about the fatal collision at 7 p.m. Monday. Clallam County Sheriff’s Office was unable to make contact with a next of kin as of Tuesday and is still considering the collision as an active investigation, according to Brian King, chief criminal deputy.

In a separate wreck, a bicyclist was hurt when he hit a car on U.S. Highway 101 on Tuesday morning. Olympic Medical Center reported that Ethan B. Sandoval, 23, of Port Angeles was in satisfactory condition later that day.

The Labor Day fatality was west of the Kitchen-Dick Road intersection on Old Olympic Highway. The unidentified man was riding on the shoulder of the westbound lane and was struck from behind by a car driven by a 25-year-old Sequim man.

The unidentified driver was attempting to maneuver around another vehicle that was stopped on the highway to yield to oncoming traffic while negotiating a left-hand turn, the sheriff’s office said.

Good Samaritans and paramedics unsuccessfully attempted to save the life of the bicyclist, the sheriff’s office said.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were involved, deputies said.

The investigation has been turned over to the sheriff’s office’s collision reconstruction team.

Tuesday’s wreck was at 7 a.m. on Highway 101 in Port Angeles, the State Patrol said.

Sandoval, who was wearing a helmet, was riding his electric bike eastbound against traffic on Highway 101 when he hit a 2002 Toyota Tacoma exiting a private business to travel west, according to a State Patrol trooper.

He sustained a broken femur, the trooper said.

The westbound right lane was closed for about 40 minutes, according to a State Patrol memo.

The cause was improper lane usage, the memo said; charges are pending against the bicyclist.

The driver of the vehicle, Kameron K. Thompson, 30, of Port Angeles was not hurt.

No drugs nor alcohol were involved, the State Patrol said.
