PORT ANGELES — A 46-year-old man remained in the Clallam County jail Saturday after he was arrested Friday for allegedly breaking two glass doors at the Port Angeles Post Office.
Edward J. Steiner was taken into custody on investigation of felony harassment and malicious mischief in the second degree.
An outer and an inner door at the west end of the U.S. Post Office building at 424 E. First St. in Port Angeles were broken.
Port Angeles Deputy Chief of Police Brian Smith said the estimated damage was $1,100.
Steiner remained in the Clallam County jail Saturday on $10,000 bond.
“We had three police responses on him yesterday morning,” Smith said Saturday.
“The last one was the call when he kicked and broke two windows in the post office at about 10:30 in the morning.”
Police had contact with Steiner earlier Friday following reports that he was yelling at passers-by on Front Street.
He was issued a citation for consuming alcohol in public.
A later report said that Steiner was causing a disturbance. Police contacted him again but said that he did not appear to be intoxicated.
Steiner was arrested at Second and Peabody streets shortly after the post office doors were broken.
A supervisor at the post office declined to comment publicly Saturday.
The case was forwarded to the Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for consideration of formal charges.
Smith said federal charges are possible.
