PORT TOWNSEND — A man found dead with a gunshot wound lying next to a gun on a hiking trail in northwest Port Townsend has been identified as Doug McFall, 78, who was reported missing Friday after his wife found a suicide note, a Port Townsend police officer said.
“[Port Townsend police] responded and determined there was no evidence of anything other than what it appeared to be: that he had indeed shot himself,” said Officer Luke Bogues, public information officer.
McFall’s wife called police Friday at 7:30 a.m. to report her husband was missing and had left behind a suicide note at their home, Bogues said, adding that he would not give her name to protect her privacy.
At 8:21 a.m., a woman walking her dog on a trail in a wooded area northeast of the intersection of Hastings Avenue and Howard Street reported finding the body of a man with a gunshot wound lying on the trail with a gun nearby, Bogues said.
