Man found dead inside burned travel trailer

SEQUIM — An unidentified man was found dead inside a Diamond Point travel trailer that was consumed by flames Monday night, authorities said.

By the time a Sequim-area Fire District 3 fire crew arrived at the blaze at 10:14 p.m., the trailer at the end of the long dirt road that is Ironwood Drive was fully involved, Assistant Fire Chief Dan Orr said Tuesday.

“By the time we got there, it had burned pretty well,” he said.

Orr said he did not know the identity of the deceased man or if next of kin had been notified.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of the blaze, Orr said.

Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict and Chief Criminal Deputy Brian King were not available for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Prosecuting Attorney-Coroner Mark Nichols said an autopsy and toxicology test would be conducted on the remains.

“There’s nothing suspicious at this point in time,” he said.

Orr said the man, believed to be in his 50s, was lying on a couch in the trailer when his body was found.

A resident in a home on the bluff on the property called 9-1-1 to report the fire.

The trailer, which Orr said was small, was one of about three or four on the property.

“It’s not like it’s an organized RV park or anything like that,” Orr said.

None of the other travel trailers were endangered by the flames, which were confined to the trailer and the area around it.

Orr said a resident of the home saw the man about 90 minutes earlier.

“They know who lives in the trailers, but they don’t know their comings and goings and those kinds of things,” Orr said.

First responders used about 1,000 gallons of water to put out the flames, he said.

The trailer was valued at about $10,000 and its contents about $5,000.
