PORT ANGELES — A 74-year-old Port Angeles man is dead after apparently falling down a bluff behind his home on Island View Road.
The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office started searching for Lyman Twing on Monday night after his wife, Phyllis Twing, reported that she was afraid he fell from the cliff where he was working.
“He told his wife he was just going to go out and finish picking stuff up and be done for the evening, but he never came back,” Detective Eric Munger said.
Munger said all indications are that it was an accidental death.
His wife reported him missing at about 9:36 p.m., Munger said. Deputy Don Kitchen arrived at about 10:20 p.m. and by 11 p.m. had found Twing’s body on the beach about 40 to 50 feet below where he was working, Munger said.
Clallam County Search and Rescue had recovered his body by about 3 a.m. Tuesday.
Twing had been out cutting trees from near the bluff most of the day. He ate dinner with his wife, told her he was tired and that he was just going to finish up what he was doing before putting things away for the night.
When Twing did not return within a couple hours, his wife became worried. She went out to check on him but couldn’t find him.
She yelled for him and tried to call his cellphone several times, but did not get any response.
Twing’s truck was found parked by the bluff with a cable still attached and his ladder and chainsaw were where he had been working.
