PORT ANGELES — A 28-year-old Port Angeles man wanted in Kitsap County for investigation of hit-and-run and being a felon in possession of a firearm has been arrested in Port Angeles in connection with a July 4 burglary on East Front Street.
Johnathan W. Grantham was charged in Clallam County Superior Court on Wednesday with residential burglary, first-degree theft, first-degree possession of stolen property and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
Grantham will be arraigned at 9 a.m. Aug. 6. He remained Wednesday in the Clallam County jail on $10,000 bail.
He will face charges in Clallam County before answering to the Kitsap County investigation.
Port Angeles police said in court documents that a state Department of Corrections global positioning system device that Grantham was wearing tied him to the burglary.
A Port Angeles resident reported on July 4 that her home had been forcefully entered and “older style” U.S. currency, coins, jewelry, stamps, silverware and liquor were stolen.
$30,000 to $40,000
The resident estimated the value of the missing items to be between $30,000 and $40,000.
Carol A. Bornson, 30, also of Port Angeles, was arrested by the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office on Monday in connection with the same burglary.
Bornson appeared in Clallam County Superior Court on Tuesday after being arrested for investigation of first-degree possession of stolen property.
She was released from custody without bail, and will answer to formal charges on Friday at 9 a.m.
Port Angeles police said a Walmart clerk identified currency that matched the description of the money taken from the Front Street residence.
The clerk said Bornson purchased more than $1,100 worth of items on July 5.
Bornson was arrested about a week later for investigation of a domestic violence-related crime, Port Angeles police said in the certification for probable cause.
Court documents state that Bornson gave police conflicting accounts of where she got the money she used at Walmart.
Prior to serving a search warrant on Bornson and Grantham, a police corporal saw Grantham traveling eastbound out of Port Angeles riding a newly-purchased motorcycle, court documents show.
A police investigations confirmed that Grantham purchased several vehicles from Bremerton-area dealers in the days immediately after the burglary.
Wreck near Port Orchard
The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office said Grantham was involved a four-car wreck near Port Orchard on Saturday. Several minor injuries were reported.
South Kitsap fire and rescue responders said one of the drivers, later identified as Grantham, had fled the scene on foot.
Kitsap County deputies found 15 rifles, two shotguns, one pump action pellet rifle and one BB pistol, none of the which were loaded, in the back of the 2000 Ford Explorer Grantham was driving, the sheriff’s office said.
The vehicle is registered to Bornson, deputies said.
Witnesses said the Ford Explorer rear-ended a Ford Ranger driven by Francisco Mendoza-Garcia, 38, of South Kitsap, who provided a description of Grantham.
Bornson was arrested at the Kitsap County Courthouse for investigation of second-degree rendering criminal assistance and violation of a no-contact order.
She was booked into the Clallam County jail and later released.
The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office said Grantham had three felony convictions on file — one for first-degree robbery and two for second-degree theft.
