PORT ANGELES – The Housing Authority of Clallam County wants to make a big impact with a new housing complex that pays attention to the environment.
Nine families will start work on new homes with the help of a series of government grants and loans.
The Olympic Vista development at the corner of Vine and Lopez streets is part of the authority’s Self-help Home Ownership Project.
So-called low-impact developments, as Olympic Vista would be, involves preserving the natural flow of rain water, moving as little soil as possible and building the structures so water runoff is as natural as possible, said Kay Kassinger, who helps facilitate the project for the Clallam County Housing Authority.
The families are required to average 30 to 35 hours a week and about 65 percent of the labor on the houses.
“We’d love to have them in there by Christmas, but it all depends on how fast they can work and what gets done,” Kassinger said.
